Boreal Birds: Spruce Grouse

Photo of Spruce Grouse

Last week, I ventured deep into central Maine, hoping to locate my first American Three-toed Woodpecker. On Day 2 of my search, after several hours of birding without seeing or hearing even a four-toed woodpecker, I was getting a bit worried.

Luckily, not one, but four Spruce Grouse -- two adults and two young -- reminded me that while I may not always find what (or who) I seek, venturing outdoors is always rewarded by beauty in one form or another.

P.S. After leaving the Spruce Grouse spot, I tried a new location, and in less than an hour located a male American Three-toed Woodpecker.
