Here are some nature notes from around York County, Maine:

Highlights from travels elsewhere in Maine included:

  • Wilson's Plover (Lifer!) on Seawall Beach, viewed from Popham Beach, Phippsburg [notes and documentation photos here]
  • Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (heard from overlook north of summit), 5 Winter Wrens, 8+ Swainson's Thrushes, and 10 species of warblers (Ovenbird, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Magnolia, Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Canada); Atlantis Fritillary and White Admiral butterflies; Mountain Cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), Labrador-tea, Yellow Bluebead-lily (Clintonia borealis), Indian Cucumber Root, and Northern Wood Sorrel (Oxalis montana) flowering; during a morning hike up East Royce Mountain in the White Mountains National Forest, Batchelders Grant Township
  • Virginia Rail (calling), Yellow-billed Cuckoo (FOY), and 2 Black-billed Cuckoos at the Brownfield Bog (aka Sanborn WMA), Bog Rd., Brownfield

  • 1 Spruce Grouse (Lifer!), 1 Black-backed Woodpecker, 4 Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, 2 Boreal Chickadees, 4 Bicknell's Thrushes (Lifer!), 9+ Swainson's Thrushes, 16+ Blackpoll Warblers, 1 Fox Sparrow, and more along Saddleback Mountain Trail, Sandy River Plantation, ME [details/photos on my eBird checklist]
  • Cushion-plant (Diapensia lapponica) and Alpine Blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) flowering at summit of Saddleback Mountain
  • Mourning Warbler (Lifer!) just below the summit of Quill Hill, Dallas Plantation, ME
  • 2 Mississippi Kites flying over Piscassic St. boat launch, Newmarket, NH

Bird highlights from my first year attending the Acadia Birding Festival:

  • Northern Goshawk (FOY) at Kittredge Brook Forest Preserve, Bar Harbor (w/ ABF van trip)
  • Wilson's Storm-Petrels (FOY), Parasitic Jaeger (Lifer!), Razorbills, Black Guillemots, Atlantic Puffins (FOY), Common Terns, Arctic Terns (FOY), and a Magnolia Warbler in heavy fog on the Acadia Birding Festival's Pelagic Seabird Boat Trip
  • 2 Cape May Warblers and 4 Bay-breasted Warblers at Mason Bay Conservation Area (Bay Rd.), Jonesboro (w/ ABF boreal van trip)

Bird highlights from my travels to and from the festival:

  • 15+ Black Terns (FOY) and 3 Pied-billed Grebes from the boat ramp at Messalonskee Lake, Belgrade
  • Black-billed Cuckoo (FOY) singing along Old Bath Rd., Brunswick
  • singing Willow Flycatcher and 2+ Marsh Wrens at Great Pond (Fenway Rd.), Cape Elizabeth
  • 2 Cliff Swallows and 1+ Nelson's Sparrow behind Clambake Restaurant, Pine Point Rd., Scarborough
  • 1 Nelson's Sparrow and 2 Saltmarsh Sparrows (FOY) along Eastern Rd., Scarborough Marsh

I spent some of the last week exploring parts of western Maine with a friend. Here are some nature highlights from my trip:

  • Olive-sided Flycatcher (FOY) along Boy Scout Road (north end), Lower Cupsuptic Township
  •  2 American Bitterns, Alder Flycatcher (FOY), 5 Gray Jays, and 3 Red Crossbills along Kennebago River Rd., Stetsontown Township
  • a brief look at a Moose (Life Mammal!) along Rt. 16 in Adamstown Township
  • 1 of each Olive-sided, Yellow-bellied (FOY), Alder, and Least Flycatchers near Trading Post Restaurant, Dam Rd. (Rt. 16), Magalloway Plantation
  • 2+ Philadelphia Vireos (FOY) and a Bobolink at the Appalachian Trail parking lot in Grafton Notch State Park
  • Eastern Wood-Pewee (FOY) along the The Roost Trail in the White Mountains NF, Batchelders Grant Township
  • numerous Canadian Tiger Swallowtail butterflies throughout my travels

Back in York County, the green season has firmly taken hold. Here are some highlights:
