Private Workshops

I enjoy working with individuals or small groups interested in getting to know their natural surroundings. Here are some of the ways we can work together:

Seasonal Plant Walks

Photo of Purple Chokeberry fruitOn a 90-minute plant walk with me, you can expect to get acquainted with about a dozen edible, medicinal, or useful species. Depending on your interests, the habitat, and time of year, I'll introduce you to ferns, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees.

Rates: $60 for 1-6 adults, or $10 per person for 7+ participants. If you'd like to schedule a walk or learn more, send me a message.

I recently took my first foraging walk with Josh along Parson’s Way in Kennebunkport. The group was small so there was plenty of time for discussion and questions. Josh provided great handouts including a small card listing the plants we would see on the walk. His talk was very informative and I learned a lot. I’m planning to do the rest of the Spring Foraging Workshop Series with Josh and highly recommend the walks for both beginners and more experienced foragers who want a refresher or just a great outing. Thanks, Josh, it was great!

I first met Josh on an edible/medicinal plant walk. I was expecting the standard approach, pointing out the common plants and their routine uses. What I discovered however, was something quite different. Josh brought the plants - as well as the world around us -- to life, with an unending abundance of knowledge about everything we came across, whether common or not. When he didn't know an answer, he was quick to say that -but even quicker to pull out the resource which could provide the sought after information. Since that time, Josh has shown unending patience with my questions - whether about a bird, animal, plant, track, insect, or something else I have stumbled on that piqued my curiosity. His knowledge, and sense of the world around him, is uncanny - and all done in a very quiet, understanding, and humble fashion. I would consider Josh to be one of the most thorough, well-rounded naturalists that I know; and best yet - he is understanding and patient with those behind him trying to learn about the complex world around us.

Custom Plant Experiences

Photo of Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) flower budsFor a more in-depth exploration of your neighborhood, I can craft a custom experience. We can map out the trees of your yard, learn the wild edibles growing in your lawn, or get to know the medicinal plants of your neighborhood. If you don't know where to start with learning the plants around you, perhaps what you need is a guide.

Rates: $40/hr for an individual or small group; $30/hr for repeat clients. If you'd like to schedule a custom plant experience, send me a message.

The custom plant walk organized by Josh was a truly wonderful experience. I didn’t know much about the trees, plants, edibles, and medicinals in the woods near my home and was eager to learn. Josh was an incredible guide. I was very impressed with his knowledge and expertise and he made it a lot of fun! He customized the walk to my interests and was thorough in answering questions during the workshop and following-up afterward. I gained so much knowledge and appreciation for these plants that I’ve just been walking by for years. We did a workshop in late fall and I can’t wait to arrange more workshops for the spring and summer!
