Dragonflies: Eastern Pondhawk

Photo of Eastern Pondhawk (imm. male)

Chances are, if you go looking for dragonflies in Massachusetts, it won't be long before you find one (or both) of these. Eastern Pondhawks (Erythemis simplicicollis) hunt over fields, roads, and other open areas, usually near some kind of water, and are one of the most commonly encountered dragonfly species. Adult males have all-blue bodies, black eyes and a green face. Immature males (top photo) are similar but have green thoraxes. Females (below photo) are the same shape, but, instead of having blue bodies, they are mostly green with black abdominal markings.
