  1. Without seeing the underside, the size of the shell opening is a guess. Periwinkles have a more rounded, circular opening with a squatter shell. An elongated opening, up the side of the shell, such as a whelk, is a different species from the periwinkle. The Atlantic whelks I’ve seen, however, were larger than what you described, Josh.
