I think it’s a male downy woodpecker on a cattail.

It is a downy woodpecker on common cattail (typha latifolia). I am now back in MA, so let me know if you are doing any birding in the Plainville area.

You’re probably right with Typha latifolia, but I’m not certain of the species, so I’ll say Typha sp. to be safe. Nice work!
