Quiz #78: Plant

On October 15, 2013, I found this American Copper butterfly nectaring on some late white flowers. Name the flowering plant. (Photo taken in Wells, ME.)

B. Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

C. Flax-leaved Stiff-aster (Ionactis linariifolius)

D. Wild Carrot (Daucus carota)

A is... incorrect. Small White American-aster (Symphyotrichum racemosum) has individual flowers with numerous thin, white petals.

B is... incorrect. Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is similar, but different.

C is... incorrect. I profiled the flowers of Flax-leaved Stiff-aster (Ionactis linariifolius) in September.

D is... Correct! The plant is Wild Carrot (Daucus carota), also known as Queen Anne's Lace.  Both the shoots and roots of Wild Carrot are edible.
