A. Sea Scallop

B. Surf Clam

C. Oyster

D. Quahog

When you are ready, scroll down for the answer…

A is… incorrect. Atlantic Sea Scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) have fan-shaped, fluted shells.

B is… incorrect. Atlantic Surf Clams (Spisula solida) have matching shells that are more triangular in shape.

C is… Correct! Oysters have dissimilar shells -- a flattish top shell (top photo) and a larger rounded, bumpy bottom shell.  Initially I thought this was a Common Oyster (Crassostrea virginica), but now I think it may be a non-native European Oyster (Ostrea edulis).  Any Oyster experts care to comment?

D is… incorrect.  Quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) have matching roughly oval shells.

  1. Josh, LOL, I got it wrong! I thought it was a quahog! I guess I will have to study this blog more to learn about the sea. I must admit, while I have lived in NE most of my life, I have never lived near the ocean. I am looking forward to it! OH, BTW, nice Life List!
