Noble Prince's-pine (Chimaphila umbellata) -- also called Pipsissewa -- is a short, evergreen plant found throughout New England and easily noticed on winter's leaf-covered forest floors. This subshrub flowers in the summer time, but the five-parted fruit capsules remain on long stalks well into the following year.
