Washed Ashore: Green Sea Fingers

Photo of Green Sea Fingers

Codium fragile, commonly called Green Sea Fingers, Dead Man's Fingers, Green Fleece, or Green Sponge is a distinctive dark-green alga of the sea.  According to Kenneth Gosner (Peterson's Field Guide to the Atlantic Seashore), this species is a newcomer to New England, first appearing in coastal waters about fifty years ago.  (Photo taken 11/30/13 in Kennebunkport, Maine.)
