Washed Ashore: Green Sea Urchin

Photo of Sea Urchin remains

These are broken exoskeletons of Green Sea Urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis).  The domed structures, called tests, are composed of twenty fused segments.  Beachcombers can find entire or partial tests, with or without spines still attached, washed up on coastal beaches.
