White Season Birds: Horned Lark

Horned Larks are small songbirds of open country. During the white season, they search for seeds and insects in plowed fields, and along roadsides, coastal beaches, and the mowed edges of airports. Finding a flock at the beach may allow an opportunity to study their footwork, by following their tracks in the sand (see below). Breeding males have short, typically inconspicuous, black "horns", which can be seen in two of the photos below. To learn more about Horned Larks, visit All About Birds.
